This song from the late 90s by Hungry Young Poets has been in my head for 3 days now. And in all instances, it is either the piano intro or the line “I wanna give you love but all I have is rain ” that keeps playing in my mind. I loved HYP and their songs – fun free, poetically uninhibited. Some lyrics were kind of awkward twined wioth the music that a companies it but they’re good nevertheless. And this song called Firewoman was my favorite. Then and now. It’s mainly because I have wanted to be a firewoman for someone, and I guess at some point someone/s had wanted to be a firefighter for me as well.

I Wanna Be Your Firewoman…
Posted in soundtrack on February 27, 2007 by supahnovaSamPi, or S.Lo – The “Hawak kamay” Photo
Posted in the neighborhood on February 26, 2007 by supahnovaOne of the most talked about (and laughed at, viewed and downloaded) picture from last week is the one of Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby holding hands. For the uninitiated, they’re actors/singers (?) from ABS-CBN, said to be among the hottest men the industry has today. Whatever – I don’t really buy that crap about them having the talent or being supposedly hot. I have seen Piolo around since my college days in USTwhenever he would guest on campus produced stage plays. It was my friend who had a crush on him and would like, melt whenever we would almost bump into him in the UST football field or that street leading to P. Noval. Sam Milby meanwhile, has always annoyed me since his irritating appearance on the “just a Smile” music video with Barbie Almalbis. Another friend and I would catch ourselves laughing our heads off each time we’d remember hwo horrible he was on that video. I mean, Brabie was like, so into it and quite good acting as the girl smitten with this guy (and she is so not an artista!) while Sam had this single facial expression (actually, no expression at all) that looked like he just had his entire face Botox-ed and so he just can’t move any muscle.
Anyway, rumors had it that these two are actually hiding some secret identity in a pink closet – a common accusation hurled at supposedly really goodlooking men.
The much talked about photo of them holding hands even made it to TV Patrol World last Friday, where some reporter showed the photo to Sam, and they had a close-up of his reaction while he was looking at it, and you know what? He actually kind of loOked “kilig” (thrilled) LOL. And when asked about it, he was like “well. Eventually the truth will come out…” WTF! What kind of answer is that? That’s such a stupid showbiz answer! What truth will come out? Will they come out? Hehehehe!
Anyway, here’s the picture. So yeah, it looks fake, photoshopped – but we can dream, can’t we? Tee hee
Postcript To The Previous Entry’s Mini-Review of Rome + Juliet:
Posted in i am random, the neighborhood on February 23, 2007 by supahnovaI never said anything like “the film was horrible”. I pointed out everything that was good about it. Okay, here’s another – it is a nice film a sense that in it, women who have been through the kind of struggle the lead characters went through sort of find a “kakampi” in R+J. It is a film that sympathized with them. The film answered a lot of questions. It showcased what it really was like to be a woman inlove with another woman. Still those weren’t enough, for me, to make me really rave about it and recommend it to anyone looking to watch a great film. It is still far from being great.
The previous review is just from the point of view of a person who has been quite exposed to a lot of films and the film making process, and especially what great films really are. I am no expert, but i know what i consider to be good and worth fawning over. This one is not. For reasons already stated. I’ve gotten a lot of flak for this review, and i just hope people will see it as it is – just a review and not a personal attack to anyone who’s involved in the film. For a first time director though, this is such a brave move – to work on a film that tackles a still highly controversial theme. So kudos to that. And i am hoping that the enxt time a same-themed film is to be made, more research and a lot more attention to detail and the film’s aesthetic quality should be made. Sure, so reality isnt all bright and beautiful, but i’m talking about the editing here, okay? Where you present the blaring, painful, ugly reality in a tasteful, almost poetic way, without taking away its essence.
Maybe i am just not seeing it the way other people had, and that’s fine. But please let us not derail ourselves from the fact, that like most of you, i am simply expressing my opinion. Let’s just all respect that. I am expecting that as people who have seen R+J and considering it as brave and revolutionary, means that we’re already mature and ready to deal with such kind of social evolution. Therefore, we should also accept the fact that not everyone will agree with us and think the same.
Nevertheless, i appreciate your two cents.
A Reward and A Disappointment
Posted in i am random, the neighborhood on February 22, 2007 by supahnovaI finally got my Starbucks 2007 planner today! Woot! Danke shon to Via, Ivy and everyone else who contributed to the sticker card. I am so excited cos I am planning to totally personalize my planner. It’s my first time to have one, and I’m planning to make it some sort of a thing to capture and preserve moments, thoughts, feelings through words. Yeah, like a good ole journal. I like the classic look, with ist leather cover and all. Not a fan of spring binders, and the photos inside aren’t as spiffy and creative as last year’s. but it’s a nice planner with big enough spaces to write whatever on. Here’s is the planner before I cut and paste and paint stuff on it.

I will post pictures of my personalized planner once I’m done.

I saw Rome + Juliet on its last day of screening at Indie Sine in Robinsons’ Movieworld yesterday. I have heard about it from friend who are either film geeks like me or film makers. From them I got mixed reviews. It is lauded for being brave and “revolutionary” as it presented an issue which is still somehow considered taboo among hardcore conservatives – that of a romance between two women. Yes, the L word Philippine setting.
People were kind of expecting that I will have a glowing review of the film, but..sorry to disappoint but I didn’t like it very much. There isn’t anything very striking about it, not much impact, nothing to really fawn over…well, there are two good things about this film: 1. Mylene Dizon… she is sooo gorgeous! Talk about Hot Mama1 2. the cast, which was made up of very good actors, especially the women. Mylene is great. So was Andrea del Rosario, and Tessie Tomas – amazing!
So why didn’t I like the film so much? Let me count the reasons: Read more »
Because I Can Be Very Random…
Posted in i am random, life, love, et al on February 22, 2007 by supahnovaa couple of nights ago, i was trying to indulge a friend’s senti (sentimental) moment. i think i said something really cheesy like “loving means giving the other person the right to hurt you.” or something to that effect, perhaps to make her feel less bad about something.
and she said, actually almost whined: “i didn’t give him the right. he just did (hurt me).”
aaawww, what am i supposed to say to that, but “um, okay… let’s go get some ice cream?”

‘there is no such thing as “wrong grammar” in literature and music. ‘
personally i think that when you are trying to convey a certain message or even simply paint a picture with your words, there are certain rules that a writer should observe. especially in poetry (where song lyrics fall under) where the writer captures events, feelings, moments or thoughts – one should be conscious if the thoughts are expressed. it should be clear and/or concise, ergo, how the words are arranged/structured should be according to established grammatical rules. because, the writer cannot attain clearness and might not be able to present his thoughts effectively.
unless the writer wants to actually present confusion, maybe grammar flubs are acceptable. and in following grammar rules, one’s likely to attain consistency too. songs express thoughts, feelings, moments, etc. so there should be a certain flow, right?
sigh, just had this argument with a friend whos’ trying to defend new local bands whose lyrics for their ’songs’ really really sucks, man. gone are the days when songwriters take their craft seriously.
Sky is Gunmetal Grey
Posted in remember this moment on February 22, 2007 by supahnovafound this poem, which doesn’t have a title, among my pile of drafts. suggestions? i can’t remember why i wrote it, but i know it was on a rainy day.
sky is gunmetal grey.
the earth, even when it’s been sunny all day, felt moist and soft, about to, wanting to – maybe swallow me.
the city buzz was less intruding – i hear some screeching, some hooting, honking, and i don’t feel the least bit annoyed.
numb. is this what numb feels?
i could get hit by a bus and i’d probly just pull myself up and walk to where i’m headed, bloody and bruised.
the sky is gunmetal grey.
the song in my head is one from a woman longing…
been a long time since…
rejection always sucks.

Posted in i am random, what's going on on February 20, 2007 by supahnovaA friend (Joan) is back in Manila (she’s originally from
Iloilo city) for a new job and to review for the bar. She is temporarily staying at this boarding house in Mandaluyong (as bedspacer). She has one roommate whom she suspects to be the one who stole money from her bag while she was in the ladies room.(the said room mate was the only person in the room during the time the money magically disappeared) She was so pissed about it she planned on leaving the said place and transfer, but not without getting back at the klepto room mate. So to the rescue are two of her crazy friends, Ate Bing and I, helping her plot the big revenge. Well, actually just something to teach the room mate a lesson.
Joan: Aaaarrgh, nakakainis talaga! Sisirain ko yung mag damit nya bago ako umalis!
Ate Bing: No, don’t do that! Mas okay kung tatakutin mo…
Joan: Paano? Nakakatakot ba ako?
Ate Bing: Gagah, maghasa ka ng kutsilyo sa harap nya araw-araw!
Me: O kaya, maglinis ka ng baril… pagpractice-an mong ikasa kunwari…
Ate Bing: Tama! With matching dialogue “matagal na rin akong walang practice dito…”
Me: “Nakaka-miss na ding bumaril… nagte-training pa ako sa Crame nung huli kong gamitin ‘to…”
Ate Bing: “parang gusto ko uli talagang mag-practice…”
Me: “Asintado pa naman ako…”
Joan: Oo nga ano? Masaya yan sige!

Another crazy friend, Via, is currently addicted to Dairy Queen’s Blizzard Pecan Cluster, as in she orders the 16 oz cup1 I could barely finish the 12 oz one! Anyway, so we were at the Araneta center branch yesterday killing time. so after gabbing about work stuff, after her making me want to pull my hair out because she’s just sooo “kulit” and bordering on obsessed / unnecessarily stressed about something, she started grilling me, about Kris Aquino. I guess the entire universe knows how I just don’t get that woman. Anyway, here’s our version of Forbidden Questions. Hehehe
V: What if she comes to you and asks you to be her lawyer, and you actually have no choice but to say yes… well, you can quit your job…but what would you do?
N: Of course I will take her case. I may not get her, and hate her guts, but as long as her issue does not conflict with my principles, I will represent her. I will do the same with other criminals.
V: What if she becomes one of my closest frend? Or any of your other friend’s, or any person you admire or respect’s close friend?
N: That’s okay. I have no control over that. But just she try messing with my friends and I’ll kick her head and fake boobs using her own legs.
V: Okay, uh, what if you find out she’s a close relative? Like, a cousin?
N: You can ignore and deny the existence of relatives you don’t like, right?
V: What if, as her lawyer, you have to defend her to the media? Like, something really bad was said about her and her case and you have to say something?
N: Okay, it is not my job as her counsel to defend her to the media or anyone, so I will just say, no comment!. Or I’ll surround myself with big burly bodyguards with huge guns and black belts in tae kwon do. If the issue in question is about how I do my job, then I will shove the confidentiality provision in the code of ethics to their faces, or, if they can, just tell them to go to court if they want the details. I will do my job and defend the woman before a court of law, but never to any other entity, human or otherwise. HEHEHEHE
